Autumn holds special memories & magic for me. Every harvest season, just my mother & I packed up the car and headed into the countryside to look at the fall colors, pick pumpkins, leaves, plants & gourds for decorating, go to farm markets to look for treats and explore the many wonders of nature. We would come home with a trunk full of pussy-willows, colorful leaves, cattails, pods, dried flowers and grasses. Each year it seemed as if we would discover something new and marvel in it all the way home.

Although my mom passed away in 1990, I still find myself heading out into the countryside of Waupaca each autumn for the annual fall pilgrimage.
Today was a picture-perfect warm and sunny, late September day.
The trees are turning and the local farm markets, pumpkin farms, corn mazes and parks are in their glory.
As I explored, I came across some unusual dried pods I don't remember ever seeing. I smiled...traditions...and I knew my mom was right with me smiling too!
