The Original Carriage House at the Apple Tree Lane B&B

I can look, and easily imagine, the horse and buggy of Charles Churchill pulling up to his homestead's Porte Cochere in 1880, to drop off the family from their ride into the bustling town of Waupaca.  I can see the staff taking Old Maude (that really was the name of Charles Churchill's horse!) and putting her in the stable with fresh hay and water for the night.

The horse drawn carriage and related tack was then put into the carriage house, however.

A carriage house, also know as a remise or coach house, is an outbuilding which was originally built to house horse-drawn carriages and related tack.  Tack is a piece of equipment or accessory worn by horses such as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits and harnesses.

Since this was once a large estate, the building is large enough to house many carriages, tack, and hay.  Additionally, it included basic living quarters for the staff who managed the horse and carriages.  It even has an attached 3-hole outhouse!
Although the horse stable in no longer on the property today, just the foundation next to the barn, this historic carriage house is still here.  It provides a wonderful backdrop to the home, a glimpse into the past, and helps many stories come alive of yesteryear.
