Riding past Shadow Lake in South Park
Leaving from the Apple Tree Lane Bed & Breakfast and riding the back roads to the start of the trail is a good warm-up of about two miles. Once at South Park, located on South Main Street, you will hook up with the official trail. http://www.waupacacountyparks.com/Portals/0/Maps/WAU-KING%20TRAIL%20MAP.pdf
Trails of woods, prairie, lakes, and wildlife
It is a paved trail, that will bring you past the lakes, oak savannah/prairie restoration, woods, fields, and wildlife (although I didn't see any deer or wild turkey on this ride, I often do). It is a picturesque ride with a few hills for interest, but primarily a fairly easy ride. The trail ends on "QQ", the Chain 'O Lakes area of Waupaca. Today, I rode into King and stopped in a few of the many wonderful shops along this stretch. I then headed back to the Inn (I had to mow!), making it a nice workout of about 12 miles. Perfect!
If you wanted to continue through King/Chain O' Lakes region, there would be much to enjoy and explore. When time permits, my favorite is to continue to Hartman Creek State Park, taking the winding Whispering Pines Drive off of QQ, past many of the lakes. That would bring you to 20-25 miles round trip from our Inn.
Scenic riding along the Wau-King Trail
Although the Wau-King Trail is one of my favorite rides, there are many other trails in the area to explore and enjoy. We can provide you with maps and information on some of our favorites! If you don't have your own bikes to bring, no problem. Nearby, Adventure Outfitters will rent you a bike (or most anything else you may need)!
